BSTU/Alexandra School Impasse (PR 9 Jan. 2012)

PRESS STATEMENT

Monday, 9 January 2012

The Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados is of the view that the protracted impasse between the Barbados Secondary Teachers Union and the Principal of the Alexandra School, has reached crisis proportions and needs to be quickly resolved.

CTUSAB opines that the protracted nature of the impasse has only served to antagonize and estrange the relationship between the parties to the dispute.

In an effort to safe guard the stable industrial climate which has prevailed within recent times, it warrants that the parties to the dispute seek to engage the collective bargaining and dispute resolution process as a means of arriving at a resolution.

CTUSAB accepts that the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development and the Chief Personnel Officer as agent of the employer superior to the Principal of the Alexandra School, should move with alacrity to bring the parties together.

Given that the BSTU has served notice of its intention to heighten industrial action, CTUSAB calls on the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development to immediately convene a meeting of the parties.

CTUSAB appeals for proper channels of communication to be established between the Ministry and the parties to the dispute, in an effort to bring about a better understanding and cooperation in resolving the issue.
