CTUSAB’s Response to Campus Trendz Store Fire - Sept 3 2010

The Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB) abhors the sinister act of September 3, 2010, which was perpetrated on the Campus Trendz Store, located on Tudor Street; resulting in the loss of the lives of six young females.  Such a violent act has devastated the nation and moreover, shattered the lives of the families of the deceased, friends, colleagues and the many persons with whom they came into contact.

The CTUSAB joins with the nation in expressing its condolences to the relatives, friends and colleagues of the deceased.

As the nation looks forward to bringing closure to this episode, the Congress urges that as a people we maintain our confidence in the tried and proven judicial system.

The Congress believes that the efforts of the Royal Barbados Police Force and the Barbados Fire Service in their individual responses to this tragic event must be applauded.

The just concluded 8th Biennial Delegates’ Conference, of the CTUSAB, noted the public’s criticism level at the response of the Barbados Fire Service to the Tudor Street fire.  It is CTUSAB’s view that the professional judgement of the fire fighters ought not to be outrightly dismissed, taking into account the severity of the risk and other prevailing factors, not obvious to the public, that would have been taken into consideration.

The Barbados Fire Service should be commended for containing the blaze, for in so doing, it would have adverted what could have proven to be a major catastrophe in the city.

The recently concluded 8th Biennial Delegates’ Conference of the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados, reaffirmed its support for the Barbados Fire Service, and further exposes the view that there is no basis for calling its integrity into question.

The CTUSAB urges the Barbadian public to maintain their full support for the Barbados Fire Service, and the Royal Barbados Police Force, mindful of the fact that these institutions have served Barbados well over the years, and have continued to do so despite the many challenges they face.
